Fashion modelling is a form of art which is devoted to displaying clothing, hair and other fashions at the time. It is mainly used for advertisements or actual fashion magazines or
other forms of reading materials, such as Vogue. Fashion photography does not usually take place in the studio, instead taking place in exotic or strange environments in order to enhance the fashion which is being displayed.
Although most people consider fashion modelling is mainly thought to be just a model posing and wearing nice or strange clothing, there is actually a lot more to it. Fashion models are always told to look a certain way, so models must always work very hard to stay in a certain shape to maintain the fashion image. This may involve having a strict diet and exercise regime. Fashion models also have to be on set for hours on end, in order to model all the clothes that the agency has provided. This could mean smiling for hours on end in the baking sun or in freezing winds. Therefore there are also health risks to this job such as the risk of sun stroke is fairly high if you can imagine standing on a beach in 40 degree heat for several hours.
Fashion models need to be outgoing people with great people skills as they will usually have to interact with several people whilst on a photo shoot, such as designers and stylists. Female models need to be at least 5 ft 8 inches.
Because of the nature of this area of photography, it can be hard to make money by just modelling because it is one of the most competitive aspects of modelling. Although there are no educational requirements for modelling, you can take courses in order to heighten your chances of becoming a successful model. However, most fashion models are only freelancers and have other careers as the money is not stable in this profession. It is only when you start getting regular shoots should you think about becoming a full time model as pay may be different for each agency and you may go through a dry spell of having no shoots.
As with all fashion models, the model must feel comfortable in what they are doing, and must check who they are modelling for are a legitimate agency and not some seedy photographer. It is recommended that amateur models bring a friend along for support.
